Lisa Brown represents school districts, public and private institutions of higher education, governmental entities, and private employers. She regularly handles lawsuits and appeals involving employment law and discrimination law; state and federal constitutional issues; civil rights law; education law, including student discipline and student rights; child abuse law; and local government law, including issues relating to public information and open meetings laws. She also regularly provides training on employment law and legal issues affecting students.
Christopher Gilbert is an experienced practitioner in all aspects of the representation of public and private schools, colleges, universities and other public entities, with particular qualifications in the role of the First Amendment at these institutions. Mr. Gilbert has litigated and advised clients on free speech rights of students and employees, free speech and the Internet, and free speech retaliation; school prayer, the distribution of religious literature in a school or government setting, the use of public facilities by religious groups, the celebration of religious holidays in the public schools, the rise of esoteric religions and their impact in the public sector, and the use of religious music in the public schools; dress codes; student newspapers and yearbooks; and library and curriculum issues.
Sandy Hellums-Gomez serves a variety of public entities in addition to schools including cities, counties, transportation districts, and port authorities. She provides general counsel, litigation, and transactional services with an emphasis on infrastructure projects, procurement, commercial and land use disputes. Ms. Hellums-Gomez also has extensive experience in condemnation, civil rights, elections law, legislative analysis, and open government.
Janet Horton advises clients on issues related to grievances, non renewals, claims under the Americans with Disabilities Act, terminations and EEOC charges. Ms. Horton works with school boards on policy development, Open Meetings Act issues the negotiation of superintendents’ contracts. She assists schools with Public Information Act questions and all issues regarding students including student discipline, constitutional rights, and complaints to the United States Office of Civil Rights under Section 504. Additionally, Ms. Horton has significant experience in representing school districts in all aspects of disputes involving the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. At the state and federal level, Ms. Horton advises lawmakers of the concerns of public school clients regarding legislative matters, especially those dealing with special education.
Lisa McBride represents public and private schools, charter schools, community colleges and other governmental entities in commercial disputes; labor and employment matters; internal and external investigations; trustee, bond, and voter-ratified tax elections; student discipline hearings; student privacy and constitutional law issues; appeals before the Commissioner of Education; and civil rights litigation. Ms. McBride is a frequent speaker on topics such as open government; elections; sexual harassment; civil rights; conducting meaningful employment investigations; student, parent, and teacher rights; and other labor and employment issues.
